SUMMARY:Volunteer Trail Workday - September 19th - Joint Program with VoCal
DESCRIPTION:The September 19th monthly trail workday will be a joint effort with another volunteer trail organization called Volunteers for Outdoor California or VoCal. The VoCal organization conducts weekend long trail maintenance and construction projects for public agencies throughout California. This month VoCal will be bringing their army of volunteers to the Arnold Rim Trail to assist our local ARTA volunteers with trail maintenance in the Sunset loop area of the Arnold Rim Trail system. \n\nVoCal events are social in nature and include two nights of camping\, food\, and fun working with other like-minded members of the trail community who enjoy giving back to the trail systems that provide them with so many trail recreation adventures. The program starts with volunteers arriving on Friday evening then a full day of trail work on Saturday and a half-day of work on Sunday before everyone breaks camp and heads home. Meals on Saturday and Sunday morning are included. I have had the pleasure of working with VoCal in the past and can attest that they are a fun event\, and they provide a great service to the public agencies they partner with.\n\nSo for all of you local ARTA trail volunteers you have two options for the workday on Saturday September 19th:\n\nCome for the normal 2-to-3-hour work program that ARTA usually conducts or \nParticipate in the full day VoCal effort and join them for the food and social activities on Saturday evening.\n\n\n\nIf you choose option 1 we will meet at the Sunset Loop (Couger Rock on some maps) trailhead off of Valley View drive at 8:30 am to conduct our normal safety briefing and project overview. (Do not go to the Forest Service offices in Hatheway Pines). You work your 2 to 3 hours and then head home.\n\n\nIf you choose option 2 and want to join VoCal for the longer day\, food\, and social activities\, you will need to register through VoCal via their website (Click Here to View the VoCal flyer). SUMMARY:Guided Sunset Hike to Cougar Rock - September 26\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Watch the sunset from the top of Cougar Rock on this intermediate hike led by members of the Arnold Rim Trail Association. If you haven’t done one of these hikes\, you owe it to yourself to join the fun. They are scheduled on weekends near or on the day of the full moon each month\, and they are special! \nIMPORTANT NOTES: \n1) This is an intermediate level 4.86 mile hike with 860 feet of elevation gain\, the equivalent of an eighty-story building. We take plenty of time with frequent stops. That said\, it is not a hike for beginners. Please assess your level of conditioning. If you would struggle with an eighty-story building\, even with stops\, please take a few weeks of regular training to make yourself ready. It’ll be worth the investment! \n2) If this is your first time driving to the parking area\, please do not approach on Valley View Drive from Avery Sheep Ranch Road. Instead approach by starting in Arnold and turning off Highway 4 onto Lakemont Drive\, followed by a quick left turn onto Valley View Drive. More travel instructions are below. \n3) Bring a headlamp or flashlight\, bug repellent\, a snack\, water\, and layers. \nNo sign-up needed\, hike proceeds even if cloudy\, but rain cancels. (And if the weather has been wet\, please see caution below about road condition on the half-mile dirt portion of Valley View Drive.) Again\, please bring layers\, snack\, water\, bug repellant and flashlight as return hike is in the dark. \nPlease arrive at the parking lot at least fifteen minutes before departure time for introductions and a brief orientation by the hike leader\, as departure times are prompt: \n\nSeptember 26th\, 2026\nArrive at Trailhead: 4:15PM\nDeparture from Trailhead: 4:30PM\nSunset is at 6:51PM\n\n(Return to vehicles about two and a half hours after departing.) \nThe trailhead is at the intersection of Valley View Drive and Forest Rte 5N95Y.\nHere’s a link to Google Maps of this intersection. \nDrive 1.50 miles on Valley View Drive from the intersection of Lakemont Drive and Valley View Drive in Arnold. SUMMARY:Volunteer Trail Workday - October 17\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:We hold trail workdays on the third Saturday during the months of April through October. If you love the Arnold Rim Trail consider joining us for one or all of these trail workday events and help us keep the ART system safe and usable and meet other members of the ART community. Attending just one workday a year helps! \n\n\n\nWHY / WHO?\nThe Arnold Rim Trail Association (ARTA) works under an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service to organize and manage volunteers to assist in maintaining trails and providing docent led interpretive programs.\n\nWHEN / WHERE?\nWe will meet at the Forest Service Calaveras District Headquarters in Hathaway Pines at 8:30 am. After a brief orientation and safety talk\, we will carpool to the trail head and hike into the worksite (location to be determined). We typically work for about 2.5 hours and then hike back to the trailhead arriving around 12:00 noon where we end the day.\n\n\nIf you are a new volunteer you will need to complete a Volunteer Service Agreement (VSA) required by the Forest Service. \nWHAT?\nMost workdays are focused on removing vegetation that grows into the trail corridor\, commonly referred to as “brushing”\, to keep trail clear and usable. We are required to wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Sturdy work boots or hiking boots are highly recommended as we normally work in uneven and slippery terrain. Also bring plenty of water\, a hat and sunscreen as we may be working in the open sun. Leather gloves are also a must. If you have a favorite loppers or folding tree saw\, feel free to bring them but we will have tools available.
